The jelly-like substance in the bone broth, gelatin, also has wonderful health benefits:

  • Anti-tumor

  • Arthritis and joint pain relief

  • Protects cells

  • Supports insulin regulation; lowers blood sugar

  • Helps normalize stomach acid

It is easy to incorporate bone broth into your life. It is fantastic as a soup base. You can also cook your veggies in bone broth. Be sure to drink up the juice as well. It is also delicious by itself as a side "beverage" with your meal. Be sure to warm it up on the stove, not in the microwave.

How I Make My Bone Broth

I buy the best quality chicken I can find. I also choose dark meat since it has more fat and makes the broth richer and it has more nutrients than white meat.

Generally, I use about six to ten chicken legs or thighs. I place them in the crockpot and cook them 6-8 hours.

Once the chicken is ready, I pull the meat off the bones and make BBQ chicken sliders or use it in a chicken broccoli casserole. The chicken doesn't freeze well so I use it up within a few days. I strain and pour the broth into a large mason jar. This broth, even though it isn't bone broth, still has plenty of health benefits.

After deboning the chicken, put all the bones, muscles, joints, tendons, fat, and anything else back in the crockpot. Pour a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar over the bones and let them sit for an hour. The ACV leaches the minerals from the bones making them available to us when we drink it.

After an hour, add vegetable scraps like onion peels and roots, carrot tops, celery scraps, etc. Fill your crockpot with water, put the lid on, and turn on low. Allow this to cook for 24-48 hours.

After 24-48 hours, strain the broth into mason jars. It will be a deep, rich shade of brown. You can add seasoning when you warm it up for your next meal.

Enjoy a cup with your meals, as a snack in between meals or as part of a dish. However you enjoy it, know that you are nourishing your body. Your body will love you for it!
